How Long Does It Take to Create an Online Course?

What's a realistic time frame for building your first online course?

So you have an idea for an online course.

Or maybe you have about 27 ideas and can’t decide which one to actually create.

You may even be trying to figure out how to fit all your ideas into one huge course.

The problem, you keep getting stuck.

Stuck on the idea.

Stuck on the title and logo.

Stuck on which platform to use.

And here you are wondering…

How long does it take to create an online course?

I’ve been creating and selling digital courses since 2017, and I think a realistic timeline for creating your first online course is about 30 to 90 days.

It doesn’t need to take 6 months or even up to a year.

I truly believe you can create your first online course and have it available for people to BUY in as little as 30 days.

The secret?

Don't make it so complicated.

Can You Really Create an Online Course People will Buy in 30 Days?

YES.

And your first course does not need 47 modules, fancy videos, perfect lighting, a giant website or a logo that took you three weeks to pick out.

You don’t need any of that.

You need to figure out three things:

  • Who do you want to help?
  • What problem can you solve for them?
  • What RESULT do they want?

That’s where your course starts.

Not with your logo.

Not with your camera.

Not with spending four hours in Canva trying to decide which shade of pink you like best.

Start with the person you can help.

Want to Create A Profitable Course Fast? Do This First.

Before you record one video, make one workbook or start researching course platforms, figure out the RESULT.

Ask yourself:

What should someone be able to do after taking my course that they couldn’t do before?

Now work backwards.

What are the steps they need to take to get that result?

There’s your course outline!

Those big steps become your modules, and underneath each one, you teach your students what they actually need to know to move forward.

Notice I said what they NEED to know.

Not everything YOU know.

There’s a big difference.

Your customers don’t want 97 videos.

They want the result they paid you for.

Why Does Creating an Online Course Take People So Long?

In my opinion, what makes creating an online course take longer than it has to is overthinking it.

People spend weeks trying to pick the perfect course name.

Then the perfect colors.

Then the perfect platform.

Then the perfect microphone.

Then they decide they need a new website.

And six months later…

The course still isn’t for sale.

Meanwhile, you could have created version one of your course, sold it to real customers, listened to their questions and made it better.

Some of the simplest things I’ve created have made me the most money.

I didn’t need Hollywood-level production for my courses.

What I did need to do was solve a problem people were willing to pay to fix.

That’s it.

How Course Creator Blueprint Students Got Unstuck and Started Selling Online

One of my students, Lucy, is a leadership coach with SO much knowledge, but she wasn’t sure how to turn everything she knew into a course she could actually sell.

She came to my Course Creator Blueprint training, figured out her course idea and put it out into the world.

She went on to generate more than $60,000 in sales very quickly.

Then there’s Susan.

She’s a bookkeeper who teaches other bookkeepers how to succeed online.

Susan already had a course, but it wasn’t selling the way she wanted it to.

We optimized a few things and worked on getting more people to her page.

Today she’s celebrating $30,000 MONTHS.

That’s what can happen when you refuse to stay stuck, and get your knowledge out into the world.

Are You Ready to Sell an Online Course?

If you’re ready to create an online course that people are willing to buy, here’s my challenge…

Give yourself 30 days to get version one created and available for sale.

Then spend the next 60 days getting better at talking about it, creating videos, building your email list and making sales.

Don’t spend a year getting ready to start.

Start.

Learn.

Sell.

Make it better.

And keep going.

Because speed beats perfection.

People are willing to pay when you can solve a real problem they have today.

If you’re sitting there thinking, “Okay Michelle, I’m ready to do this but I still don’t know where to start, how to film, or what to price my course at…”

That’s exactly why I created The Course Creator Blueprint.

I’ll walk you through the process so you can stop overthinking your course and start getting what you know out into the world.
