Most of the videos I create today are filmed right from my phone because, after years of trying different cameras, microphones, setups, and equipment, I learned something very important.
The best video setup isn't necessarily the fanciest one.
It's the one you'll actually use.

Should I Make Professional Videos With My Phone or Use Expensive Equipment?
For years, I used a $600 Canon camera.

Why I Prefer Filming Videos on My iPhone Instead of a Fancy Camera
My phone is always with me.
I can have an idea, set up quickly, and start filming.
I don't have to take out a memory card, put it into my computer, wait for files to transfer, and then send everything somewhere else to edit it.
I can record right from my phone.
I can make quick edits from my phone.
I can send the video to my editor from my phone.
The fewer barriers there are between me and hitting record, the more videos I actually create.
And that matters.
That's why the best camera for creating content is the camera that removes barriers between you and hitting record.
The 3 Things You Really Need to Make Good Videos With Your Phone
People tend to overcomplicate this.
What makes great videos comes down to three things, your camera, lighting, and audio.
You do not need a professional studio.
You do not need thousands of dollars in equipment.
You really just need these three things.
1. A Good Phone Camera
You do not need the newest, fanciest phone on the market.
You need a phone that can record a clear video.
That's it.
One quick tip: clean your camera lens before you record.
Your phone goes everywhere with you, and one tiny fingerprint can make your entire video look hazy.
Wipe the lens, set up your phone, and make sure the camera is positioned around eye level.
You do not want to film from way below your face unless you're going for the accidental double-chin documentary look.
Eye level usually feels much more natural.
2. Good Lighting
Lighting can make a huge difference in how professional your video looks.
And no, you do not necessarily need an expensive lighting setup.
A bright window can be your best friend.
Face the light instead of putting the window directly behind you.
When the brightest light is behind you, your face can look dark even if the room seems bright.
Natural light in front of you or slightly off to the side usually looks much better.
The goal isn't Hollywood perfection.
You just want people to see you clearly.
3. Good Audio
Good audio matters.
A lot.
When you move farther away from your phone without a microphone, your audio can start sounding distant, echoey, or muffled.
I use a wireless microphone so I can move around while I'm filming and still sound clear.
People will forgive a video that isn't Hollywood-perfect.
But if they can't hear you?
That's bad news.
Really bad news.
Clear audio, decent lighting, and a good phone camera can take you a very long way.
My Simple Setup Before I Hit Record
I like simple.
The more complicated I make something, the less likely I am to do it consistently.
So before I record, I keep my routine quick:
- I clean my camera lens
- I make sure the phone is around eye level
- I check the lighting on my face
- I connect my microphone
Quick tip: Keep a mirror nearby. I have literally filmed like five videos in a row only to realize I had lipstick on my teeth in all the videos. There's nothing more annoying than noticing that after recording the videos.
After I record a few seconds, I play it back to check:
- Can I see myself clearly?
- Can I hear myself clearly?
- Is there anything weird happening in the background that I somehow didn't notice?
Done.
You do not need to spend 45 minutes preparing to make a three-minute video.
Sometimes the best thing you can do is stop adjusting everything and hit record.
The Biggest Video Mistakes I See Beginners Make
One of the biggest mistakes is waiting to make videos.
Waiting for a better camera.
Waiting for a nicer office.
Waiting until you feel more confident.
Waiting until you lose ten pounds.
Waiting until the kids are quiet and the house looks perfect.
Friend, you could be waiting forever.
Another big mistake is trying to sound perfect.
People connect with people.
They don't need a robot reading a script at them.
Connect with people.
Be yourself.
And please don't make one tiny mistake and restart your entire video 27 times.
I promise nobody is analyzing your video that closely.
Keep going.
How I Edit Professional Videos Right From My Phone
You do not need a professional editor before you start making professional-looking videos.
Today, I send many of my videos to an editor, but I didn't always do that.
I used to edit my own videos.
And even now, there are times I'll do some editing myself to make quick appearance adjustments to my videos before sending them off to be edited.
When I'm editing a video on my phone, I typically put it into Instagram and edit there first. I download it from the app before I add music so I can use the video on other platforms.
Other apps I sometimes like using are the Instagram edits app and the InShot app on my phone.
If the video is a little more complicated I do like to use CapCut on my desktop or Filmora.
But here's the most important thing.
Do not turn editing into another giant obstacle.
The goal is not to spend six hours making one two-minute video perfect.
The goal is to create something clear, helpful, entertaining, and worth watching.
Then put it out into the world.
The Phone Storage Mistake That Almost Stopped Me From Making Videos
Okay, nobody talks about this until you're right in the middle of filming the greatest video of your life and your phone basically says, "Nope. We're full."
This happened to me.
My phone kept filling up, and I couldn't keep filming.
Eventually, I realized I simply didn't have enough storage.
So, I upgraded to a phone with a lot more storage and that problem disappeared.
It might sound like a small thing, but it removed one more barrier between me and creating content.
And the easier it became to create content consistently, the more opportunities I had to connect with my audience.
How Making Videos Helped Me Build a Million-Dollar Online Business
Years ago, I remember watching other people making money online and wondering how in the world they were doing it.
Then, eventually, I made my first online sale.
And I was like, wait.
What just happened?
I figured something out.
That first sale was the beginning of something much bigger.
In the first year after I really figured out my online system, I generated more than $1 million in revenue.
Since then, my videos and online ecosystem have helped me generate millions.
